Columbus is a town of 5,000 located on the Crawfish river in south central Wisconsin, approximately 28 miles east of Madison. The historic downtown area with over 200 century-old buildings was used to film a series of scenes for the 2009 movie "Public Enemies." Despite its small size, Columbus has an extensive system of trails and parks, including Fireman's Park, Meister Park, Kiwanis Park, Avalon Park and Rotary Park. Golfers will enjoy the Columbus Country Club and the Kestrel Ridge Golf Club, while the paved country roads around Columbus make a good location for family bike rides. Visitors can also hike, canoe, fish and cross-country ski in the Columbus Wetland preserve. Limited accommodations in and around Columbus include a budget hotel and bed and breakfasts.

Columbus Carriage House

This Victorian bed and breakfast is located in the heart of downtown Columbus. Each room is distinctly decorated and includes a private bath and a full breakfast made with organic local products. Guests can spend an evening on a local farm or take a carriage ride through Columbus. The Carriage House is near Fireman, Washington and Rotary parks and less than one mile from the Columbus Country Club.

Super 8 Columbus

The Super 8 is located just off Highway 151 on the outskirts of Columbus. Guests receive complimentary continental breakfast and access to the fitness room and indoor pool. The Super 8 is a half mile from the Columbus Wetland Public Hunting Grounds, a public preserve that consists of 175 acres of wetland, 60 acres of upland and 20 wooded acres.

Fountain Prairie Inn & Farms

Located five miles east of Columbus on State Road 16, Fountain Prairie is an inn at a sustainable family farm that offers guests the opportunity to explore 280 acres, including 60 acres of restored tallgrass prairie and wetland. The 17-room Victorian farmhouse built in 1899 offers five guest rooms that overlook the natural woodland setting. A full breakfast is served each morning. From Fountain Prairie, it is a short drive to the Columbus aquatic center and Kestrel Ridge Golf Club.
