Russell is a small town of approximately 5,000 people in central Kansas. It is situated between the Smoky Hill and Saline Rivers in the Smoky Hills region of north-central Kansas. Russell is flanked to the south by the Fossil Creek tributary. Old US Highway 40 passes through Russell and runs parallel to Interstate 70. Highway 40 is a good alternative to the interstate for those travelers who wish to explore the surrounding area at a more leisurely pace. Nearby, Wilson Lake, with its picturesque rock formations and pristine waters, provides 100 miles of shoreline, where nature enthusiasts can enjoy fishing, boating, camping and hiking.
