The Best Mexican Restaurants in San Francisco

The Best Mexican Restaurants in San Francisco
San Francisco has a long history of great food establishments and Mexican food is no exception. From taquerias to full restaurants, the city has a diverse collection of Mexican eateries. Here are a few of the most popular Mexican restaurants in San Francisco, based on diners' experiences.

The Taco Shop @ Underdogs

Self described as a fusion restaurant, The Taco Shop @ Underdogs is part taqueria (authentic Mexican taco shop) and part sports bar. While some taqueria purists may have a problem with this fusion idea, the restaurant has loyal customers. "Their specialty are the tacos served 'Nick's Way,' with one soft tortilla and one crispy tortilla making up the shell of your taco, filled with your meat of choice, beans, salsa and a ton of guacamole," says Taco Shop fan Marcela Muñiz. The atmosphere is casual and cool, with sports being televised on every wall. Average cost per person runs from $10 to $15 (as of 2009).

La Taqueria

La Taqueria embodies the Mission District authentic Mexi-Cali culture. It's a casual, cash-only place. The most popular items are the carnitas and carne asada tacos and burritos, which cost $3 to $6 apiece (as of 2009). There is an additional charge for extras like avocado, sour cream and chips, which are a must. Ask for your order extra crispy and they'll fry the tortilla; it's pure bliss.

Tres Agave

Located a block away from AT&T baseball park, Tres Agave serves cuisine from the Mexican state of Jalisco. A fine example is the carne en su jugo estilo Jalisco. Other dishes of note are the ceviche and guacamole. Tres Agave has a top-notch tequila selection which goes perfect with their popular happy hour. Their prices range on the high side with dinner plates from $13 to $22 (as of 2009). A popular spot with the downtown working class and Giants fans.

The lunch menu includes tacos, burritos, enchiladas and tamales and orders are taken at the taqueria stand. Local art work and a romantic light design mask the stand at night for the dinner crowd. The dinner menu includes chorizo appetizers and seafood entrees. Lunch prices range from $4 to $12 while dinner prices range from $6 to $19 (as of 2009).
