Hotels in the South of England

Hotels in the South of England
Southern England offers many popular and historic areas for tourists to visit. While it may be difficult to narrow down selections for your trip, some locations are standout places for getting a taste of the country. Many of these key locations also offer tourists a home base: a hotel to stay in while exploring the surrounding area.

London: Kensington Premier Inn

Of the many hotels to choose in London, most are expensive, but the Premier Inn chain provides a reliable and inexpensive option. Premier Inns operate throughout the United Kingdom, and although they are usually "no-frills" hotels, they are clean and provide all the essentials for a comfortable stay, including a pleasant and helpful staff. The Premier Inn in Kensington offers an excellent location for exploring the city. It is within easy walking distance of attractions such as Kensington Palace, Albert Hall and the Victoria and Albert Museum. It is also near numerous restaurants and shops, including famed department stores such as Harrods and Harvey Nichols. Other popular sights are nearby and readily accessible by a short ride on the underground tube.

Canterbury: The Falstaff Hotel

Canterbury is a historical city in the southeast county of Kent. The Falstaff is a moderately priced hotel with a great deal of charm and a favorable location. Established as a coaching inn during the early 1400s, it has served as popular place for visitors to stay for the past 600 years. It is decorated in the comfortable and romantic style of an inn that has been plucked from the pages of a Charles Dickens novel such as "The Pickwick Papers" or "David Copperfield," which is partly set in Canterbury. Being near the West Gate of the city, this hotel is well situated for walking to the most visited locations in Canterbury, including Canterbury Cathedral, Marlowe Theater, Weaver's House, St. Augustine's Abbey and St. Martin's Church.

Oxford: Mercure Eastgate

Although sometimes mistakenly thought to be in the Midlands, Oxford is actually the county town of the southeast county of Oxfordshire. The historic city of Oxford is most famous for its architecturally impressive university buildings, but it is also a good location from which to visit picturesque Cotswold locations and other historic areas, such as Stratford-Upon-Avon. The Mercure Eastgate Hotel is within footsteps of popular tourist attractions within the city of Oxford, including the colleges of Magdalen, Merton and Christ Church, and is also close to numerous eateries and the shopping center. The hotel itself is comfortable, and many of the standard rooms are spaciously large. It is kept immaculately clean, and the staff is accommodating. Room rates vary from moderate to slightly high, but the Eastgate remains a favorite choice for returning visitors.
