Nanaimo, which means "a great and mighty people" in the Salish language, was originally inhabited by the Coast Salish Snuneymuxw tribe. The city of 79,000 is on the east coast of Vancouver Island, which is about 34 miles west of the British Columbia mainland and accessible only by ferry or airplane. From salmon fishing to hiking to camping, Nanaimo is awash with things to do for visitors.

Harbour Light Motel

The 28-room Harbour Light Motel is two blocks from the Harbourfront Walkway and the Old City Quarter with its heritage buildings and dining establishments. The motel offers free local calls, cable TV and Wi-Fi. Smoking rooms are available. Small pets are welcome at no charge.

The Buccaneer Inn

The family-owned and operated Buccaneer Inn is in an urban seaside neighborhood across from Newcastle Channel. It is the closest motel to the Departure Bay ferry terminal three blocks away. Amenities in the 11 suites (one with a wood-burning fireplace) include fully equipped kitchens and separate bedrooms. The two studio units have kitchenettes. Other amenities include hairdryers, free local calls, irons and ironing boards, complimentary in-room tea and coffee, and high-speed Internet. All rooms are nonsmoking. On-site parking is free.

Port-O-Call Motel

The Port-O-Call Motel is five minutes by car from the Departure Bay ferry terminal and within walking distance of downtown Nanaimo. The three-floor motel offers 42 rooms and suites, some with kitchens. Room amenities include a 25-inch TV, complimentary in-room tea and coffee, queen or double beds, and AM/FM clock radio. The motel has an on-site restaurant and outdoor pool. Weekly rates are available. The Port-O-Call Motel accepts pets, but a fee applies.
