Capsule Hotel Asakusa Riverside
For a novel night adventure in Japan, try the Asakusa Riverside capsule hotel. Capsule hotels are inexpensive sleeping quarters for Japanese business people. At about $30 to 40 per night, capsules are only a place to sleep, but an interesting alternative to pricey Tokyo hotel rooms. Capsules are stacked individually, and include the basics: a bed, light, TV and alarm. You are given a locker, pajamas and allowed to take a few personal items in the capsule with you. The Asakusa Riverside is the only capsule hotel in Tokyo that takes women. Women and men sleep in separate capsule areas, with separate communal bathrooms. While fairly private, capsules are not best for single travelers or anyone suffering from claustrophobia. Once your sleeping adventure is over, pack up early in the morning and head for Ueno Park via nearby Asakusa Station, or take a short walk to Tokyo's old theater district for breakfast.

Hotel Park Side
Hotel Park Side is an international hotel with compact, clean Western-style rooms and a convenient central Ueno location. The hotel overlooks Ueno Park and Shinobazu Pond, and has a classy lounge on the top floor for spectacular views of Tokyo at night. Ueno Park and Japan's top museums including the National Museum of Nature and Science are right outside Hotel Park Side's door. If you have kids in tow, head to Ueno Zoo, which is famous for its giant pandas and a five-story pagoda from the year 1631. On the way back to Hotel Park Side, rent a row boat and float around the lotuses on Shinobazu Pond for only $1 per hour, unless the kids insist on renting a swan boat ($7). If you are lucky enough to be in Ueno Park in late March or early April, don't miss the best cherry blossom display in Tokyo. Bring a picnic lunch and sit under showers of falling petals, in the Japanese spring tradition of "Ohanami" or cherry blossom viewing.
