Known as "The Sunfish Capital of the World," Onalaska is a great place for anglers all year round. Situated between the Black and Mississippi Rivers, it's also a paddler's paradise. Aside from fishing, kayaking and canoeing, Onalaska is a cyclist's haven, linked to over 100 miles of bicycle trails from the Great River State Trail to the La Crosse River State Trail. For meetings and functions, there's a conference center with seven meeting rooms that can accommodate up to 1,000 guests. This lodge is six miles from Grandad Bluff, the highest point in La Crosse County and a favorite among hikers. The Great River Bicycle Trail, a 24-mile trail that traverses the prairies and backwaters of the upper Mississippi River valley, is only four miles away.

Lumber Baron Inn

Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, this bed and breakfast was built in 1888 and was completely renovated in 1995 to preserve its Victorian appeal. Lumbar Baron Inn pampers guests with an elegant four-course breakfast served daily against a backdrop of stained glass windows, gaslights and a magnificent view of Lake Onalaska. Its four guest rooms have scenic views and are furnished with antique desks, fluffy robes, plush pillows, comforters, television sets and air conditioning units. The property also features a game room with a pool table and a living room with a cozy fireplace. Right behind the property is the Great River State Trail, where people can go biking, jogging or hiking. Other recreational facilities and attractions are less than 10 miles away.

Shadow Run Motel

Located on the Great River Road, this property equips its rooms with a kitchenette, refrigerator, table with two chairs and cable television. Some rooms are adjoining and have balconies overlooking Lake Onalaska. Shadow Run has facilities for bicycle storage, truck and boat parking, outside plug-ins and an enclosed fish-cleaning room. The lake, which is just across the road from the motel, offers fishing, kayaking and swimming activities. For cyclists, biking trails are just 176 yards away, while for hikers, the bluffs are eight miles away. Golf enthusiasts can hit the greens within two miles of the motel.
