Michigan's upper peninsula is an outdoor junkie's dream. From trout-swamped streams to rugged snowmobile trails, this northern destination provides ample activities for nature-lovers. For those who can't leave home without Fido, fear not. Because of the hunting and outdoorsy culture in the UP (as Michiganders call it), many hotels welcome four-legged friends.

Country Inn & Suites

The Country Inn & Suites By Carlson is located in Iron Mountain, which lies close to the Wisconsin border. The newly built hotel (completed in 2007) offers comfortable accommodations like complimentary high-speed Internet, cable television, an indoor pool and an on-site workout facility. While the hotel does allow pets, it asks that guests notify it ahead of time. The rooms are all non-smoking.

AmericInn Lodge & Suites of Calumet

The AmericInn Lodge & Suites of Calumet sits in the Keweenaw Peninsula, one of the most northern points of Michigan. The hotel does allow pets, but a fee may apply, so guests should alert the staff when making the reservation. While your pet may cost you a few extra dollars, guests 12 and under stay free with an adult. Free Wi-Fi, an indoor pool, complimentary hot breakfast and a ski wax room are just some of the notable features. Some rooms are handicap-accessible and include an in-room jacuzzi and fireplace.

Brockway Inn & Boreal Beans Coffeehouse

The Brockway Inn, a locally owned and operated establishment, is set in Copper Harbor, a town on the northernmost tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan. Dogs are welcome but cost $5 a night per pet. The hotel staff asks guests to give it advance notice if a dog will be joining them. Guests are responsible for any damage caused by their dog; the dog cannot remain unsupervised in the hotel room. The intimate hotel--only six rooms are available--offers free wireless Internet access and hot coffee in the morning. The Boreal Beans Coffeehouse, which is attached to the hotel, is only open during the summer months but offers an array of hot coffee drinks as well as pastries.

Holiday Inn Express Lakeview

The Holiday Inn Express Lakeview is located in Munising, a coastal town surrounded by national forests. Snowmobile and cross-country skiing trails are easily accessible nearby. The hotel opened in 2005 and offers 62 smoke-free rooms. The pet policy requires that guests register their pet beforehand and pay a fee of $10 a night per pet.

Park Inn Hotel

Located in Sault Saint Marie, the Park Inn Hotel offers complimentary continental breakfast, free high-speed internet, a fitness center and cable television. Travelers from afar can easily reach the hotel via the nearby Chippewa County International Airport. An on-site laundry facility is an added perk for guests. The hotel asks to be told in advance if guests intend to bring pets, so they can reserve a designated pet-friendly room.
