The Best Running Shoes for Supination

The Best Running Shoes for Supination
For runners, supination (or underpronation) is when the foot doesn't roll inward enough when it strikes the ground. Usually a result of high arches or a tight Achilles tendon, persistent supination can lead to joint and tendon issues such as Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis. Since stability trainers have a tendency to encourage supination, choose neutral and lightweight shoes, whose flexible soles are generally good for underpronators, as they allow for more foot motion.

Nike Free Everyday +2

Nike's Free Everyday +2 shoe ($95 as of 2009) is a lightweight trainer designed to emulate running barefoot. While many lightweight trainers lack the support needed to train in them every day, the Free Everyday +2 adds the cushioning to allow for daily training. At 9.9 oz., the shoe combines minimalism with support to allow feet to move naturally without sacrificing comfort, and the deep grooves in the outsole encourage the foot's natural flexibility.

Newton Men's Performance Neutral Trainer

Newton's Men's Performance Neutral Trainer ($155 as of 2009) allows flexibility in spades. The ultralight racer utilizes Newton's Action/Reaction Technology to maximize runners' strides, and the shoe's neutral profile allows runners to have a more balance footstrike. Open-air mesh lets the shoe breathe and dry quickly, and a lightweight, high-rebound midsole provides unobtrusive stability.

Mizuno Wave Ronin 2

At 7.5 oz., Mizuno's Wave Ronin 2 ($95 as of 2009) is a racing shoe that is extremely light, with a flexible sole allowing feet to move freely while providing comfort and support. Mizuno's Wave midsole plate absorbs shock and disperses it throughout the foot, while the lightweight and flexible G3 DR outsole provides a lightweight, flexible cushion.
