A great way to relax during an afternoon of exploring, after a cruise around the Casco Bay islands, or while meeting up with family or friends is to visit one of the Portland, Maine's Old Port casual, quirky, and affordable pizza restaurants. From dining room views of the bay to signature pizza dough, there's no better way to experience Portland than by eating locally.

Flatbread Company

The Flatbread Company is located on Commercial Street, a main street in Portland's Old Port, and is adjacent to Casco Bay Ferry Lines, which launches boats year-round to many of the Casco Bay islands. Flatbread is easily accessible by foot and is located close to many of the Old Port's hotels. Metered parking is also available right outside the restaurant. Indoor and outdoor seating offer views of the bay, which gives the restaurant a local feel. Pizza here can also be ordered as take-out.

In addition to selecting your own ingredients to create a pizza, Flatbread offers a number of specialty meat and vegetarian pizzas, such as "Cheese and Herb" and "Homemade Sausage," all baked in a wood-fired cauldron or wood-burning oven. Flatbread also offers organic salad and a small selection of desserts.

The Corner Room

The Corner Room is located at the corner of Exchange and Federal Streets, two popular and lively streets in Portland's Old Port, and is a sister restaurant to The Front Room (another Portland restaurant offering comfort foods) and The Grill Room (yet another Portland restaurant that features wood-fired meats). The Corner Room is situated in what used to be the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies. Like most other restaurants in the Old Port, the Corner Room is accessible by foot, but metered parking is available on surrounding streets if you arrive by car.

The Corner Room's website describes the restaurant as "rustic Italian." The restaurant offers homemade pizza in addition to pasta, antipasti, and bread. The Corner Room's pizza menu features "Corner Room Classics" such as traditional margharita (tomatoes and cheese) and prosciutto and arugula. You can also create your own pizza, with a base of tomato sauce and cheese and additional toppings, from traditional like pepperoni to unusual like egg, at $2 each.

Portland Pie Company

Originally opened as a take-out/delivery pizza company, Portland Pie Company's success lead the business to open a flagship location in Portland, Maine's Old Port with a dine-in area and bar. The restaurant is located on York Street, a street that connects to main roads in the Old Port, and is close to the Casco Bay Bridge. The restaurant is easily accessible by foot, but metered parking is available on surrounding streets if you're traveling by car.

Portland Pie's menu is made up of gourmet pizza (named after Maine's landmarks) with flavored pizza dough (such as blonde, wheat, basil, or beer and garlic) and fresh, local ingredients. The restaurant offers "build you own pizza," with ingredients ranging from fresh garlic to buffalo chicken, along with meat, chicken, and veggie specialty pizzas such as "The Old Port," with pepperoni and cheese, and the "Nor'easter," with blue cheese sauce, mozzarella, buffalo chicken, and celery.

In addition to pizza, Portland Pie also offers signature sandwiches, wraps, salads, appetizers, and dessert. The company also launched a sister company, It'll Be Pizza, which distributes Portland Pie's signature flavored doughs to supermarkets and other restaurants.
