Hotels in the Syracuse, New York Area
Syracuse, New York, once enjoyed the fruits of tourism as people would flock to the Central New York city to bathe in the healing salt waters of Onondaga Lake. With those days long gone, the city once again finds itself a tourist destination due to its central location to all parts of the state. The finger lakes are an hour away, as is Lake Ontario. Following Route 81 north will take you the the Saint Lawrence Seaway, the Thousand Islands and Canda. But before a visitor takes off for points west and north, time spent exploring the Syracuse area is both rewarding and exciting. Central New York is textured with rolling hills called drumlins. Created by the glaciers of the Ice Age, the maple and pine covered hills are picturesque in all seasons. The Erie Canal turned Syracuse from a town to a major city and even though the canal is gone within city borders, portions still exist in the suburbs. Hikers can travel down the actual trail of the towpath that long ago was used by mules pulling the barges up and down the waterway. Starting at Cedar Bay, the towpath travels uninterrupted thirty miles to Rome, N.Y.
