Ely, Minnesota, draws tourists for outdoor recreation. The area offers camping, fishing, ice-fishing, hiking, horseback riding, bird-watching, wildlife-observing, hunting, canoeing, dog-sledding, snowmobile-riding, snowshoeing and bicycling. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area is in Superior National Forest next to Ely. The forest offers visitors more than 1 million acres of wilderness. There are more than 1,500 miles of waterways to canoe and explore. These waters are filled with small-mouth bass, trout, walleye and northern pike.

Timber Trail Lodge and Resort

Timber Trail Lodge and Resorts is on the White Iron Chain of Lakes. The resort and lodge are seven miles from downtown Ely along the shores of Fish Lake, one of four interconnected lakes. Guests have direct lake access for canoeing, fishing and boating. The resort is a family lodge that offers guest rooms and two- to six-bedroom cabins. All rooms and cabins have kitchens with all cooking and eating utensils, coffeemakers and toasters. Free Wi-Fi, available in the lodge, also reaches some of the hotel rooms and cabins. Two of the cabins offer satellite television. Pets are welcome.

Shagawa Inn Resort

Shagawa Inn Resort is a mile and a half from downtown Ely on the shores of Shagawa Lake. It offers single cabins with one to three bedrooms. Each cabin has cable television, full kitchen with stove top, refrigerators, microwave ovens, coffeemakers and full utensils, according to the inn's website. Every cabin has its own boat dock with picnic table and grill. Guests must bring their own toilet tissue. The inn also offers several motel rooms that do not have kitchens. The resort also has campsites and a fish-cleaning room.
