The Texas oil boom began in the Beaumont-Port Arthur area when oil was struck at Spindletop in the early part of the 20th century. Oil still plays a major role in the economy, but the creation of Texas Point National Wildlife Refuge, Big Hill Bayou National Wildlife Management Area and development of Paradise Island have drawn visitors without oil connections.
