Situated in the Catskills, Sullivan County was home to many hotels and resorts that formed the "Borscht Belt," a popular spot during the mid-20th century for Jews on vacation from New York City. Catskill Park and Forest Preserve occupies the Northern part of the county, offering approximately 300 miles of marked, maintained hiking trails. The park also has numerous mountains above 3500 feet, five of which have historical fire towers on their summits. Besides hiking and mountaineering, fishing, skiing and paddling are also common. Given its popularity as a tourist destination, Sullivan County has plenty of dining options.

The Old Grist Mill

Situated in the rustic hamlet of Burlingham, The Old Grist Mill was once a working flour mill and boasts beautiful views of the Shawanagunk Kill. The menu includes American and Continental dishes, including specialties such as "Long Island Duckling" and a "Kartner Goulash" with sautéed strips of veal and Beef Tenderloin smothered in onions with paprika sauce. Note: The restaurant is closed Monday and Tuesday. Also, reservations are highly recommended.

The 1906 Restaurant & Steak House

Located near the Delaware River, the 1906 Restaurant serves modern American cuisine in a rustic yet elegant atmosphere. The establishment features unusual meats such as buffalo steak, venison and ostrich. The restaurant also features a full wine menu and received Wine Spectator Magazine's "Award of Excellence" for its outstanding selection. Reservations are recommended.

Eldred Preserve Restaurant

Eldred Preserve, Sullivan County's largest fishing resort, has a fine restaurant for guests as well as the public. If you like trout, this is your place. The restaurant serves fresh trout 12 different ways including Florentine, amandine and Grenoble. They also have an excellent selection of steaks and chops. The restaurant also offers a Thursday special with a complete trout dinner (salad, trout, dessert, coffee) for the price of a trout entrée. Note: This restaurant serves dinner only.

The Lazy Beagle Pub & Grill

The Lazy Beagle serves American dishes in a friendly atmosphere. Menu includes standards like New York strip steak and broiled filet of halibut. Many ingredients in the food come from Chef Martin Ruef's own garden. Kids menu is also available. Restaurant is closed Monday and Tuesday.
