Hotels in Syracuse, New York
Syracuse, N.Y., often referred to as being in upstate New York, is actually in the center of the state. Known for its chilly winter climate, Syracuse is the home of Syracuse University. The region around central New York is punctuated by rolling hills known as drumlins, formed by the retreating glaciers of the Ice Age, and the city sits on the shore of Onondaga Lake, one of the saltiest lakes in the country. Syracuse history is punctuated by the service of the Erie Canal, which once crossed through the very heart of the city. Today, several miles of the canal remain intact, and hikers, joggers and cyclists can traverse vast expanses of the towpath that parallels the waterway. Beginning on the edge of Syracuse in the Dewitt area, the towpath extends uninterrupted all the way to Rome, N.Y. (about 30 miles).

Hikers can exit the towpath at Green Lakes State Park and enjoy one of the many glacier-formed lakes in central New York. Green Lakes features a hiking trail surrounding the shimmering green lake, and boats are available for rent. The water is cold but clear and clean. Green Lake and its neighbor, Round Lake, are two of only 15 meromictic lakes in the country, where the top water and bottom waters seldom, if ever mix. The result of the lakes uniqueness is the startling and beautiful green coloration visible most of the year. The park also houses on of the area's best public golf courses. Syracuse is home of the New York State Fair, which comes alive every Labor Day.
