Laveen, just 10 miles to the west of downtown Phoenix, offers a host of outdoor recreational activities. Visitors to Laveen can boat or fish on the Salt and Gila Rivers, which are known for bass, trout and catfish, or take a hike through South Mountain Park, an urban park that offers mountain and desert terrain. When visiting Laveen, the most convenient places to stay are on the western side of Phoenix.

The Hilton Garden Inn is an upscale, four-story property located in Avondale, on the western end of the Phoenix metropolitan area. There is an on-site restraurant, pool and complimentary fitness center. The hotel also has a 24-hour convenience store. Rates as of late 2009 are about $150 a night.

Homewood Suites, also located in Avondale on the western side of Phoenix, offers one- and two-bedroom suites, which are great if you plan to stay for an extended period of time or are bringing your kids on the trip. All suites have cable television, high-speed Internet and kitchens. There's also a free hot breakfast offered each morning. A pool and fitness center are located on site. Rates as of late 2009 are $100 to $150 a night.
