Indian Restaurants in Metairie, Louisiana

Indian Restaurants in Metairie, Louisiana
Nothing quite beats a good plate of Indian food. Forget Cajun food cravings. There's plenty of that to go around in this town that is a mere six miles from New Orleans. No, when locals crave the exotic here, they are thinking of soft, yet slightly crispy, naan instead of beignets and food as spicy as you can take it -- chicken, shrimp or lamb instead of jambalaya. Since India Palace closed, locals of Metairie, Louisiana have been looking for a place to get their curry fix. Here are a few options for those who crave Indian spice.

Taj Mahal Indian Cuisine

Open since 1992, Taj Mahal Indian Cuisine has been rated as a favorite Indian restaurant by readers of New Orleans Magazine. This unassuming hole in the wall restaurant specializes in Tandoor Mughlai cuisine. This style of cuisine is made in an authentic clay oven and includes plenty of vegetarian and low fat dishes, as well as hearty meat options. The restaurant's Indian menu is vast. The appetizers include dishes such as keema naan, flat bread filled with ground lamb, green onion and fennel and samosas, meat pies stuffed with chicken or potato and peas. The entrees include various meat and vegetable curries, from relatively mild to tongue-melting hot and creative vegetarian dishes like saag paneer, a creamy spinach and white cheese dish. They also have the Indian comfort food, tikka masala, a chicken dish with tomato sauce. For dessert, you can expect traditional gulab jamun, fried dough balls floating in rose syrup and kheer, Indian rice pudding. Stop in for the lunch buffet to experience a little of everything at a good price.

Tandoori Chicken Restaurant

This local, family-run Indian restaurant has become a Metairie favorite. Like Taj Mahal Indian Cuisine, the interior and exterior of the restaurant are unassuming, but the piping-hot food will cure any Indian food craving. Tandoori Chicken Restaurant focuses on Indian home cooking. Like most Indian restaurants, vegetarian options are plentiful. But chicken is what this Indian restaurant does best. Indian classics like Tandoori Chicken, Butter Chicken and Chicken Curry are staples in the restaurant's authentic menu.

Unfortunately, since India Palace is closed, the number of Indian restaurants in Metairie has decreased from three to two. If you are craving something that is not on the menu at Taj Mahal Indian Cuisine or Tandoori Chicken Restaurant, you might want to try making it yourself. International Foods and Byblos Market both have the ingredients necessary to make a fantastic curry. Essential chicken curry ingredients that may not be found in the local grocery store include: fresh ginger root, hot curry powder, coconut milk, cloves and cardamom. You can even pick up some naan and basmati rice to complete the meal.
