Go striped bass fishing at the rugged, Shinnecock East County Park. Spend a day or more in the parks, hiking, rowing, bicycling, kayaking, canoeing and camping. Afterward, take your family for well-deserved German cuisine at fine German restaurants along the coast.

Bring your appetite to Pumpernickels Restaurant in Northport and dine on jaeger schnitzel with bratkartoffeln, for example. Select from a long list of seafood dishes such as broiled genuine bay scallops. The menu also offers vegetarian platters.

Eat lunch Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dinner runs Monday through Thursday from 5 to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 4 to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 9 p.m.

Pine Grove Inn was first built in 1910 from pine trees in the area, becoming a speakeasy during Prohibition and undergoing a few more changes and renovations until it became the fine restaurant it is today in East Patchogue. Enjoy homemade baked stuffed clams, one of a long list of appetizers. Order the wiener roastbraten or half Long Island duckling for dinner. Prime rib night is on Thursdays. Bring your family on Sunday for the brunch buffet.

Pine Grove Inn's hours Tuesday through Saturday start at 11:30 a.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. Come in on Fridays for happy hour and a complimentary buffet from 3 to 6 p.m.

Potato pancakes with applesauce or coconut shrimp whet your appetite for an entree at Frederick's Restaurant in Melville such as pistachio-crusted salmon or wiener schnitzel. Finish your meal with apple strudel, one of the desserts offered.

Hours for lunch Monday through Friday are from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dinner hours run Monday through Saturday from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Although closed on Sundays, Frederick's will open just for you and your private party of 25 or more.
