Tacoma, Washington, is a port on Puget Sound, and is about 30 miles southwest of Seattle, 25 miles northeast of the state capital of Olympia and northwest of Mount Rainier National Park. Tacoma's Point Defiance Park is one of the largest urban parks in the country, and includes such attractions as Owen Beach, a pagoda, a zoo and aquarium. Other recreational activities within easy driving distance include golf, skiing, beaches and lakes, scuba diving, and several walking and hiking trails, according to traveltacoma.com, the city's visitor website.

Babblin' Babs Bistro

Named for the chef's mother, Babblin' Babs Bistro serves a French café menu of croissants, quiches, soufflés and sandwiches. The family-owned business strives to purchase local food only. Wine and beer are served, including several selections for area breweries. The bistro is small, only serving about 20 to 30 for breakfast and lunch Tuesday through Sunday. The restaurant can be rented out for private dinners. According to its website, it is the only four-star restaurant in the Proctor District of Tacoma, which is an area of Tacoma encompassing part of Puget Park.

The French Hen Bistro

The French Hen is a quaint eatery tucked into the town of Lakewood. Located south of Tacoma, to the east of Puget Sound and off of Interstate 5, The French Hen is a small bistro that most travelers never see. The restaurant serves salads, soups and sandwiches for lunch. Fine chocolates and truffles are made on-site, and a sample truffle is delivered to the table at the end of the meal.

La Crème Brûlée

Open for lunch and dinner Thursday through Saturday, La Crème Brûlée is a small, out-of-the-way, eatery in historic Steilacoom. The restaurant's location overlooking the Puget Sound affords breathtaking views of both the sound and the Olympic Mountains. The owner/chef is French-born and has successfully recreated a romantic French ambiance with candlelight and music. Life-size photos of instantly recognizable Parisian locations are projected onto the walls adding to the Parisian feel. The menu includes traditional French and European dishes such as escargot, roasted duck, crepes, and several desserts including, of course, crème brûlée. A full selection of French wine is also available.
