Tola, Nicaragua, is located between Lake Nicaragua and the Pacific Coast. It is both the name of a city and of a region. The region extends on the Pacific Coast from Brito Beach, located above San Juan del Sur, to Chacocente, where the Olive Ridley turtles lay their egg.

This area is just being discovered by tourists and investors. While some amenities exist, this is not a heavily commercial area. It is popular for the dramatic coastline and for having some of the best surf beaches in Nicaragua.

Punta Teonaste

This is the luxury resort in this area. It features 16 eco-friendly villas that are exquisitely decorated, using local woods and materials. These villas are grass-covered one- or two-bedroom units featuring views of the Pacific Ocean. You will have your own private patio with a hammock, allowing you to relax and enjoy the ocean breezes. The bungalows boast open-air bathrooms with tropical gardens to allow you to bath under the moon and stars or enjoy the sun's rays during the day. Take advantage of the pool and gym. The hotel also offers Wi-Fi, horseback riding, surf and boogie boards, bikes and volleyball. There is a spa with thermal waters and yoga. Relax with a variety of board games. The restaurant is award-winning, with a French chef and breakfast included. It specializes in honeymoon packages and in surfing.

Las Plumerias Lodge

A French-owned resort dedicated to surfing, it offers a surf school, starting with children as young as 5. Inexperienced surfers are welcome, however, advanced surfers will be delighted as well with their experience. This is an eco-friendly resort and is all-inclusive. You can stay either in a traditional bungalow for two or a family one for four. All bungalows feature a private bathroom, living space and private terrace with an ocean view. The bungalows have ceiling fans and mosquito netting. You can also enjoy fishing, horseback riding, turtle watching in season and excursions to other parts of Nicaragua such as the colonial city of Granada or the arts and crafts market in Masaya.

Hotel Brio

This is a small boutique hotel with just six rooms. It offers a restaurant that is open from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. It offers satellite Internet service as well as rents surf boards and mountain bikes. Activities include surfing, fishing and snorkeling. You can also take Spanish lessons.

The hotel opened in 2007 and the restaurant in 2009. The owners have implemented many sustainable design features, including an organic vegetable garden. Prices are quite reasonable. Reserve well in advance if you plan to come during the holidays or in prime surfing season: April through September.

Buena Onda

This hotel offer you a wide range of choices in lodging options. There is a small hotel with five rooms. The most basic room is dorm style with four bunk beds and a shared bath. The accommodations are basic and priced accordingly. There are also some basic private rooms with baths.

The alternative is two luxury villas that you can rent, which offers everything you can imagine from a full kitchen to satellite TV with international programming to air-conditioning.

There is a restaurant and bar that is open from 7:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. Activities are wide ranging and include horseback riding, kayaking down the Nagualapa River, yoga classes, snorkeling, biking, hot springs and hiking in a 100-year-old mango grove. Fish or watch sea turtles. Play board games with fellow traveler, or just spend the entire day reading in your hammock.
