Steamers at the Dock
Enjoy the beautiful view of Tongass Narrows and the cruise ships docked right across the street at Steamers on the Dock. Take the outside elevator next to the entrance of a retail store to the third floor. Open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday, the restaurant offers steaks, chicken and pasta dishes, and terrific Alaskan king crab legs (caught in the Bering Sea) for the seafood lover. A popular dining spot that can get a little noisy, diners can enjoy a large selection of beer on tap and live jazz entertainment.

Pioneer Cafe
Pioneer Cafe is a friendly landmark restaurant with a reputation for good, down-home food where the locals eat. Open for breakfast and lunch, food is fresh and filling and the prices are reasonable. Two short blocks from the cruise dock, this cozy 1950s-style diner is across from charming Whale Park. It's nothing fancy--decor is simple with metal tables and chairs, and photographs of Alaska scenes like the eruption of Mount Redoubt in 1989 and fishing boats adorn the walls. Specialties include reindeer sausage, huge Alaska cheeseburgers, and fresh halibut fish and chips. Come early for breakfast and try the fresh blueberry or strawberry pancakes that will serve two.

There's a bar with a separate dining area. Open for lunch and dinner, it offers excellent Alaskan seafood such as salmon chowder served in a bread bowl or the bleu cheese crusted halibut. It also has full bar service. Take home a loaf or two of the restaurant's famous sourdough bread.
