Delicious Colombian food can be hard to find in Ronkonkoma, N.Y., but several good options do exist. Of course, to taste that specific combination of European, African and indigenous cuisine, a trip to Colombia might be in order. In the meantime, however, one can enjoy some Colombian food a bit closer to home.

La Brasa

La Brasa is a casual Colombian eatery in Lake Ronkonkoma. The inexpensive menu offers a host of options, including a mixto--a chicken and chorizo dish, classic rotisserie chicken and the La Brasa specialty, perros calientes, hot dogs made of beef and pork. This Colombian favorite is served in a sesame roll with pineapple sauce to add a variety of flavor. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and most dishes are under $10.

Gallo Tropical of Patchogue

Located on Main Street, Gallo Tropical of Patchogue boasts a wide variety of Colombian cuisine. Gallo Tropical is owned by the Bustamente family, whose rich Colombian history influences the restaurant's culture. Try a gyro de pollo asado--a grilled chicken sandwich--or a native dish like the churrasco--grilled shell steak with rice, salted buttered potato, and beans. For the less adventurous eater, Gallo Tropical also offers typical Mexican dishes such as fajitas and quesadillas. Gallo Tropical boasts two dining rooms arrayed in Colombian decor: the Alfresco Room and the Tropical Room. Prices range from $6.50 to $24. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weeknights, and it stays open until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Pollo Rico

Pollo Rico offers a combination of classic Mexican and Colombian dishes. Chicken, rice and beans are heavy on the inexpensive menu. For a typical Colombian side dish, try a fried cassava, a salty treat served with salsa or dipping sauce. For dessert, enjoy a fried sweet banana or flan, a caramel custard delight. Pollo Rico is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, and prices range from $3 for smaller portions and sides to $21.50 for a larger meal.
