Hotels on Seine Islands in Paris

Hotels on Seine Islands in Paris
The two islands in the Seine River, Ile de la Cité and Ile Saint-Louis, are literally the center of Paris--all mileage measurements from the city start in front of the Notre Dame Cathedral on Ile de la Cité. If location, location and location are your main considerations, you can't go wrong by booking into one of the hotels on Ile Saint-Louis.

Hotel du Jeu de Paume

Besides Notre Dame, Ile de la Cité also has the Hotel de Dieu hospital, the Conciergerie prison and the Palais de Justice (with the exquisite Sainte-Chapelle), so there is little room left for hotels, which are found on Saint-Louis. Housed in a 17th-century mansion that included an indoor tennis court, Hotel Jeu de Paume is one of four in a string along the main street in Ile Saint-Louis, interspersed among the boutiques, restaurants and the famous Berthillon ice cream parlor. Be warned: This is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in Paris, and hotel rates reflect the premium on real estate here. Three-star hotels such as these generally feature private bathrooms with shower or bath, satellite/cable TV, telephone and Wi-Fi Internet access.

Hotel Saint-Louis en l'Isle

Paris hotel rooms are notoriously small, and the amenities in these three-star hotels are rather Old World. That said, stay in one of these hotels and you have Paris at your doorstep. The Hotel Saint-Louis en l'Isle is in a venerable town house. It offers the lowest rates of the four hotels, but also earns more traveler complaints on review sites for less than satisfactory conditions. The hotel has its fans, however, and is a good bet for budget-minded travelers with a sense of adventure.

Hotel de Lutèce

Located in another 17th-century mansion house, the hotel has antique furniture, ancient stonework, vintage tiles, wood beams and tapestries to transport you back to that time. Rooms are small and those facing the street can be a bit noisy, but visitors love having easy access to either Right or Left Banks.

Hotel des Deux-Iles

Recently renovated, this hotel--which has the same owner as Lutèce--combines modern design touches with tradition such as the blue-and-white Portuguese tiles in the bathrooms. The breakfast room features stone arches and a fireplace.
