Romantik Hotel Goldene Traube
This large four-star hotel in the city center next to the market square has been a hotel or restaurant for more than 300 years. It gets generally good marks from visitors for clean and nicely decorated rooms. You pay for the extra star--room rates here will be higher than in Coburg's smaller hotels.

Grosch Hotel
This traditional hotel on the edge of town is part of a brewery that has been making beer since 1492. Decor is rustic and rooms are spacious, with some of them overlooking the beer garden. The restaurant offers Franconian and Thuringian specialties, besides the beer brewed on the premises. One of the beers is named after Martin Luther, who spent several months in Coburg in 1530. The famous Hummel figurines favored by collectors all over the world are manufactured nearby.

Hotel Garni Haus Gemmer
This modest inn just a 10-minute walk from the old town is more like a bed and breakfast than a hotel. There is no lobby, and staffing is minimal--be sure to call ahead if you're arriving late so they can leave a key for you. There is no restaurant, but there is a generous breakfast buffet. Rooms are well kept and relatively spacious, but have only limited Internet access.

Tulip Inn Coburg
Business travelers not seeking charm can stay at this sleek, new chain hotel--formerly the Mercure Hotel--outside the city center. The modern rooms are good-sized, though amenities are limited. For instance, there is no fitness room and only a bar instead of a full-scale restaurant. But the hotel, which caters to the business traveler, gets good marks for service and a good breakfast buffet.
