Dutchess County, tucked away in the Hudson River Valley, is a 90-minute drive from New York City but a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of big city life. Rich in history, the area is abundant with landmarks, restaurants and natural scenic beauty. From the Catskill Mountains, to the foothills of the Berkshires, the natural beauty of Dutchess County is best seen on foot. The Appalachian Trail cuts through the eastern portion of the county while the Harlem Valley Rail Trail and the Hyde Park trails will take you past historic homes and parks. The Hudson River Research Reserve offers boating, cycling and hiking but perhaps the most dramatic vistas can be seen from the Stissing Mountain Fire Tower which offers views across three states.

Twist in Hyde Park is Zagat rated and featured for both food and services. Twist offers a game menu not found in most area restaurants including juniper marinated elk chop and sauteed hudson valley duck breast. A mixed variety of American cuisine round out the menu including pastas and seafood. Desserts are varied for every palate. Twist offers a children's menu and patrons fortunate enough to sit at the chef's table will get a fascinating view of the kitchen. An eclectic variety of beers flow on tap and in the bottle.

Calico Restaurant

Award-winning Calico Restaurant has earned critical praise from local and national reviewers. Calico is an intimate dining experience serving American cuisine with a European touch. It is Zagat-rated and ranked top 15 for food and service in the Southern New York and Connecticut Guide. Calico has a patisserie specializing in French pastries. For dinner, charbroiled steaks are the house specialty as well as the roast pork tenderloin. Portions are moderate and the service is excellent. The dining room is small but intimate.

River Station

River Station offers American cuisine specializing seafood and steaks. The first-floor pub provides a comfortable waiting area and features more than 20 beers on tap. Dining is offered on the patio during the summer monhts offering a sweeping view of the Hudson Valley. Known for its chowder bar, diners can choose from five varieties of clam chowder offered daily. The danish baby back ribs are a house specialty as as is the tortellini en brodo. The oldest eating establishment in the city of Poughkeepsie, River Station has live music on weekends, Sunday football specials in the fall and a year round Friday fish fry.

The Eveready Diner

Eveready in Hyde Park is the quintessential great American diner and has been featured on the Food Network. A gleaming reminder of a bygone era, the Eveready has a classic diner menu. Breakfast is served all day and it offers every variety of eggs and pancakes imaginable. Ed's famous malted waffles are served with ice cream, or try the banana waffles. The burgers are 1/2 pounders and charbroiled. The atomic burger, featuring hot chili and cheese on a kaiser roll is a house specialty.
