Garden Route Hotels in South Africa

Garden Route Hotels in South Africa
An actual 200km travel route made famous by its beauty and attractions, the "Garden Route" has now become a formal term for an entire, multiprovince region of South Africa. The Garden Route winds its way along the coastline facing the Indian Ocean (and activities like boating, kayaking and whale watching) before heading inland on two separate segments. One heads into the Western Cape and toward outdoor activities at Cango Caves and the Swartberg Wilderness area -- think hiking trails, mountain biking and spelunking -- while another leads towards the Eastern Cape's Tsitsikamma Forest and safari treks. Along the route you will find many fine places to stay.

Tarn Country House

Located on 100 acres of privately owned forest and where the Tsitsikamma Forest meets the Outeniqua mountains, the Tara Country House on Plettenberg Bay offers guests a choice of nine en suite rooms that include basic singles to luxury suites. Knowing that hiking the nearby forest is a popular pastime for guests, each room comes complete with a hiking staff and drinking water and each reservation includes breakfast. The inn is family-friendly and besides accommodating children with high chairs and special sleeping cots, children are encouraged to gather eggs from the inn's chicken coops for participation in their own breakfast. Saltwater swimming pool on premises.

Diaz Strand Hotel and Resort

Located on the beach in Mossel Bay, all 86 of the resort's air-conditioned rooms face the ocean and feature balconies. The resort's fine dining restaurant, Bahia dos Vaqueiros, also offers fabulous views of the ocean and features local produce and a fine menu of locally produced South African wines. Two more casual restaurants and a bar serve more modest meals in a relaxed atmosphere.

The resort features two pools for guests' use, one indoor and one outdoor, a separate Jacuzzi and at poolside there are a couple of slides and tubes included for water park-like fun for children and adults. Golfing guests can opt for any of three courses -- all with ocean views -- at the adjacent Mashie Golf course and hotel staff will assist guests with additional activities including helicopter trips, beach horseback riding, scuba diving and sea kayaking.

Sleeping Beauty Guest House

Taking its name from the mountain peak that rises above it, the Sleeping Beauty Guest House in Riversdale was built in 1880 as a Victorian parsonage. Surrounded by some of the same gardens established a hundred years ago and bordered by a river, the guest house also borders a riding school and open fields. Four guestrooms are large and all are en suite. Each reservation includes a full English or Continental-style breakfast and dinners are available at the guest house with advance reservation.
