Hotels in the Marquesas Islands

Hotels in the Marquesas Islands
Immortalized by Henry Melville's famous novel "Typee" and by French painter Paul Gauguin, the Marquesas Islands remain one of the hidden wonders of the world. Traced by remote beaches and high mountains, 1,000-foot waterfalls cascade down volcanic cliffs and lush tropical jungles. A French colony since 1843, the official languages spoken are French and Tahitian. Only six of the 12 islands are inhabited, the main two being Nuku Hiva and Hiva Oa, which offer ocean-front accommodations and an endless selection of activities around the islands and the sea.

Pension Kanahau

Nestled in the lush forest of Hiva Oa island, Pension Kanahau offers four wooden bungalows equipped with a ceiling fan, an electrical mosquito repellent and private bathroom. A bigger bungalow houses a diner where guests are treated to local specialties such as freshly caught fish and seasonal vegetables. Included in the nightly rate is a shuttle to and from the pension to the village of Atuona and a guided tour of its craft industry. Activities available include horseback riding, four-wheel driving to archaeological sites, deep-sea diving, fishing and pedestrian excursions to visit Tiki, petroglyphs and paepae, the Marquesan ceremonial stone platforms. Bungalow rates, as of 2009, range from $121 to $176 per night. Discounts are available for stays over four nights, and a 10-percent deposit is required upon booking. Credit cards are not accepted.
