Twelve miles off the Rhode Island mainland, Block Island is accessible via plane and four ferries, one of which operates year-round. With 17 miles of beaches, 350 ponds, wildlife preserves and miles of nature trails, the island inspires constant outdoor activity and understandably. Limited pet-friendly accommodations exist, and most venues have minimum stays and reduced rates during mid-week or in the off-season.

Inns

Perched on a bluff overlooking Old Harbor, the Inn at Block Island offers some handsome options for your pet. Originally a circa 1900 sea captain's home, the inn has air-conditioned rooms, some with ocean views. Relax after a day of exploring on the wraparound porch. Open mid-May through October. 2009 rates (plus pet fee) are $159 to $269 per night.

Only a short walk from the beach and the ferry landing, the Gothic Inn is a pet-friendly hotel with four pet-designated units; three are apartments with full kitchens. Built for a 19th-century sea captain and druggist, the house commands views of the surf and the activity in Old Harbor. Daily breakfast is included. Open May through mid-October, 2009 room rates are $145 to $245 per night (apartments are more).

Centrally located on Water Street overlooking Old Harbor, the Old Bakery Inn has two units that can be opened to make a suite for a small groups traveling together. One of the two-bedroom units affords water views and the other looks onto the Historic District, while both share a deck. Open May through mid-October, 2009 rates are $109 to $489 per night.

Bed and Breakfasts

A short walk from beaches and the Old Harbor, the Island Home is a Victorian bed and breakfast overlooking the harbor and ocean. Dogs are allowed in two of the carriage house suites, which both have private decks. Open May through mid-October, 2009 rates (plus $25 pet fee) are $145 to $355 per night.

The Upstairs, less than 1 mile from downtown, allows pets in their off-season and at their discretion. A cottage with a kitchen and deck and a suite with a private deck are available. Open May through end of October, 2009 rates are $700 to $1,100 weekly for the cottage and $95 to $165 nightly for a suite.

Houses and Townhouses

The historic Spring House Hotel does not allow pets but manages houses and townhouses that do. In 2009 rates are as follows: house: $3500 weekly (mid-June through Labor Day) or $600 per night; townhouse: $2,300 to $4,300 weekly or $695 per night.
