Settled around 1770, Old Chatham is one of the oldest hamlets in the area and originally prospered as a stop on the Boston-Albany turnpike. Although destroyed by a fire in the early 1800s, the small town can boast to once being the home of a store owned by Teddy Roosevelt's great-grandfather. Located to the southeast of Albany, Old Chatham is centrally located between many exciting outdoor activities. It is surrounded on all sides within about 15 miles by various state and national forests, is about five miles from Schodack Island State Park, an area that not only serves as a wildlife refuge, but also has a full harbor and many miles of trails and is under 20 miles from the Bousquet Ski Area.

The Old Chatham Country Store

Re-opened in 2004 under the leadership of two graduates of the Culinary Institute of America, the Old Chatham Store is considered a landmark of Village Square. With breakfast specials including items like pumpkin pancakes and Kendall Brook smoked salmon, and lunch staples like elaborate salads and a "Create Your Own Sandwich" option, the Old Chatham Country Store has distinguished itself amongst the dining options in the area. Don't forget that the restaurant also features ample deli, dessert, bakery and beer and wine selections. Not only a full service eatery, the attached store also offers ice cream, coffee beans, maple syrup, dairy products and local cheeses from area farms. The store is open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday (closed Mondays) with breakfast service daily from 7 to 11 a.m., and hot lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with salads and sandwiches available until 3 p.m.

The Blue Plate Restaurant

Advertised as "The American Bistro with International Implications," the Blue Plate Restaurant features not only exceptional food, but also live music, heavy on improvisational jazz. The dinner menu consists of pastas and proteins, most notably the Eggplant "Imam Bayidli" and signature Blue Plate Meatloaf. The Blue Plate is also proud to feature an extensive selection of wines and beers, as well as ample options for dessert. Open from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 5 to 9 p.m. on Sunday. Closed Mondays.

Jackson's Old Chatham House

Proudly owned and operated by the Jackson family for four generations, Jackson's Old Chatham House opened in its current form in 1945. The restaurant's motto, "How often do we get together," not only hangs over the entrance, but can be heard frequently coming from patrons and staff alike inside. With menu selections like honey fried trout, seafood diavolo, veal sorrentino and a half duck with cider sauce, Jackson's exhibits the rich flavors that comes with years of experience. Open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
