Wendover in Buckinghamshire is a quaint country town near the famous Chiltern Hills. Only an hour by train from London, Wendover is popular with walkers, hikers and cyclists who come to this pretty town to walk the Ridgeway National Trail or cycle the trails in the Wendover Woods. The town is also a wonderful place for a weekend getaway with its unusual shops, old whitewashed thatched cottages, historic public houses and nice restaurants. There is only one hotel in Wendover, but there are several hotels in Aylesbury less than 3 miles away.

The Red Lion Hotel

The Red Lion Hotel in Wendover was actually mentioned by Robert Louis Stevenson in his books. Formerly a 16th century coaching inn, The Red Lion Hotel has been recently refurbished and is now a thoroughly modern 23-room hotel offering comfort, friendly staff and a convenient location. Every room at the Red Lion offers guests color TVs, beverage making facilities and en suite bathrooms. Bar snacks are available in the bar, where you can also find some excellent ales and draft beers. Holiday Inn Aylesbury

The Holiday Inn in Aylesbury is only 3.3 miles from Wendover, so a short hike or an even shorter trip in the car. The Holiday Inn is one of the largest hotels in the area, with 139 guest rooms. A fitness club offers pilates, stretch and spinning classes, if you don't get enough exercise hiking the many Wendover area trails. West Lodge Hotel, Aylesbury

The West Lodge Hotel was once a lodge house and was part of the Rothschild Estate. The property is now independently owned and has been converted into a lovely country hotel. The hotel's nine rooms are decorated in traditional British Victorian cottage style--pretty and quaint. The hotel has single, double or twin rooms available, all with en suite bathrooms, DVD TVs, tea and coffee making facilities and hairdryers. There's also wireless Internet available in the public rooms. A full English breakfast is included in the room rate, with fruit juices, yoghurt, cereal and a typical cooked English plate of bacon, free range eggs and sausages. Dinner is also available on request with several British cuisine options and fresh fish and vegetarian dishes. The West Lodge Hotel is in a wonderful location in Aylesbury, as Aston Clinton Park is at the end of the lane, with lovely walks and views over the Vale of Aylesbury. It's also a 5-minute car ride to Wendover.
