Hotels in Constance
In this medieval town, summer is the best time to enjoy the gentle beauty of Lake Constance. Take an afternoon off and lounge at the pebble beach or hike along the lake shore. On a clear day, you can even see the Alps from the trail. Constance's close proximity to Switzerland makes it one of the few German cities that escaped the Allies' bombing during WWII, and you can still visit the original architecture on a stroll through the Old Town area south of the Rhine. The hotels here are clustered by the lake and in the Old Town. Since it is mainly a summer destination, the price varies greatly during high and low seasons.

Steigenberger Inselhotel

Steigenberger Inselhotel is one of the most luxurious hotels in Constance. Converted from a 13th-century Dominican monastery, it is situated directly by Lake Constance on a tiny private island and only a few minutes' walk to the city center through a bridge. The rooms are spacious and tastefully decorated. You can borrow bicycles from the hotel without charge, which is a great way to get around the city and explore Lake Constance.

Waldhaus Jakob Hotel-Restaurant

Waldhaus Jakob--Jacob's Forest House--is tucked in a wooded area at the edge of Constance and a few steps away from the beach. Compared with other luxury accommodations by the lake, Waldhaus Jakob's 35 rooms are modest but clean and comfortable. The price also is comparably modest at EUR 125 (USD 189 at 1.5 dollars to an Euro) during the high season as of 2009. Right next to the hotel is Constance's hot spring facility, which has an mineral spring bath, an outdoor pool with a view of the Lake and sauna. The hotel is a 10-minute drive from the city center but in close proximity to the water and the hiking trails.

Golden Tulip Halm Hotel

At the heart of Old Town Constance, the four-star Golden Tulip Halm Hotel combines old-world charm with modern amenities. Its magnificent restaurant, Maurischen Saal--Moor Hall--transports you back to late 19th century, when the hall was built. You could almost imagine the wealthy European vacationers dancing and socializing here after a relaxing day promenading by the lake. The lavish breakfast buffet at the hotel's Brasserie is also something to look forward to each morning.

Gästehaus Centro

The 31-room guesthouse in the center of the Old Town is close to all the shops and restaurants in the city and within walking distance to the lake. The doubles start at EUR 65 (USD 98.3), and the price includes a large, clean room with private bath, free Wi-Fi and a continental breakfast (note: Those who are allergic to American fast-food chain should be warned that the guesthouse is on top of a McDonald's, which is also where the breakfast is served). The guesthouse is a relative bargain for travelers who want to stretch their dollars.
