Best Restaurants in Lexington, Kentucky

Best Restaurants in Lexington, Kentucky
"Best" means a lot of things: classiest, most expensive, most well-reviewed. To a busy hiker or paddler, it's more likely to mean the casual joint with the best, freshest, most filling food in town. Ideally, it's also the place with vegetarian choices, generous portions for good prices, and close to outdoor spots. Lexington has several restaurants that fill this bill, but three are standouts.

Saul Good Restaurant and Pub

On the south side of town, Saul Good Restaurant and Pub makes its home in an unassuming strip mall. The unprepossessing exterior hides a funky, eclectic interior with a menu that matches. The food is based on an American pub menu; beer, pizza, burgers, and sandwiches, then kicked up a notch or two, with entrees like fresh veggie pizza, Wild Turkey-marinated sirloin, and Szechwan steak sandwiches. The real treasure here, though, is dessert: all chocolate, all the time, with an amazing chocolate fondue with several things to dip and savor.

Asian Wind

Asian Wind is a top-rated Chinese restaurant on the west side of town, near Elkhorn Creek. Their menu is focused around fresh variety with no MSG, and they have an excellent vegetarian and vegan selection. The most interesting offering is their different kwachik plates. The menu describes them, very accurately, as a sort of Asian fajita, served sizzling to your table with homemade Asian-style crepes to wrap meats, tofu, and veggies.

bd's Mongolian Grill

Mongolian grills serve up selections of raw meats and veggies buffet style; you, the customer, choose which you want, add sauces, and give it to a chef to cook in front of you on a hot flat grill. bd's Mongolian Grill in Lexington is one of a small but growing chain of Mongolian grill restaurants, and it's excellent, with a large variety of meats, tofu, veggies and sauces to choose from. Customers have the choice of a one-bowl trip or an all-you-can-eat meal including soup and salad. This is the right restaurant if you want complete control over your meal, picking and choosing vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, low-carb, or low-fat, and seasoned as mild or spicy as you wish. Its casual atmosphere makes it very friendly to hikers, and its location on the southeast side of town put it close to many of central Kentucky's best caves, parks, and trails.
