German Restaurants in Minneapolis, Minnesota
Traditional German cuisine is known by certain dishes and flavors. Red cabbage, mustard, and horseradish are common. Wurst, or sausages, of all kinds, pumpernickel bread, knodel (dumplings), potato pancakes and strudel are some of the best known German culinary products. The German restaurants of Minneapolis serve a number of dishes representative of that culture. Most of these dining establishments are within a mile of city parks or other entertainment venues.

Gasthof Zur Gemutlichkeit

The English translation of the restaurant name means "inn to the geniality." This establishment has been known for the welcoming atmosphere and good German cuisine it serves. Many of the German favorites are on the menu, including sampler platters for one or two diners. Spaetzel, rouladen (rolled beef with onion, mushroom and bacon), schnitzels of various kinds, sauerbraten and gulaschsuppe (goulash) are on the menu. Accordionists and other musicians play German music for the restaurant's guests. The bar part of the business is known as Mario's Keller Bar. Polka music entertains guests some evenings in the Keller (Cellar), and disco finishes the night. After a day of golfing at Francis A. Gross Golf Course to the east or Columbia Golf Course to the north of the restaurant, supper at Gasthof Zur Gemutlichkeit may be the next stop.

Gluek's Restaurant

The name Gluek has been known in Minneapolis since 1857, when Gottlieb Gluek arrived from the Old Country and started a brewery. Later, Gluek's would become known for its Bavarian-style beer hall and more recently a restaurant. Much of the lunch and dinner menu is American, but there are a few dishes served with Gluek sausages and hot German potato salad. This establishment does not serve breakfast. Gluek beers are available but not brewed at the location. Stop in for live music most Tuesdays through Fridays. The restaurant is almost due east from the Target Center and about 10 blocks north-northeast from Loring Park.
