Gunzenhausen is a quaint town in Germany's southern state of Bavaria that is recognized by the state as an official recreation and leisure destination. Bikers and hikers alike will find a big selection of routes in and around the Gunzenhausen region. Bikers alone can choose from over 15 various trails covering 310 miles.

The town lies next to the Altmühlsee and near the Kleiner and Grosser Brombachsee. Just to the north is the Mönchswald. The Altmühlsee features a 500 acre nature preserve, home to nearly 300 species of birds. Bird watchers can observe from various spots on a trail that surrounds the preserve, including an observation deck overlooking this pristine piece of water and land.

The Hotel Adlerbräu has been catering to its guests since 1868 with Bavarian flare. The Hotel Garni Engel is conveniently located near all the major outdoor activity areas and a short distance from Gunzenhausen. Reiterhof Altmühlsee

The Reiterhof Altmühlsee lies only a stone's throw from the lake. The hotel offers double and family rooms with bunk beds for the kids. Also available are apartments and an array of various guesthouses for large families or groups. Horses roam freely on the hotel's grounds and guests from beginners to experts are encouraged to ride. Lessons are available from the hotel's professional equine staff. Horseback riding facilities are on-site, along with the acres upon acres of pastures and forest surrounding the hotel grounds. Other activities such as windsurfing, kayaking and swimming are always available at the lake. The hotel often has package deals designed for guests interested in a particular recreation, such as surfing or sailing.
