Eating vegan on the road is always a challenge. Unless you're visiting a vegan mecca, sniffing out a good place to eat can be very difficult. Nowhere is this more true than Kittery, Maine, which has no vegan restaurants within its town limits. However, there are a few places which are vegan or vegan-friendly in the immediately surrounding area. Without traveling far from your hotel or hostel, you can get good vegan eats on the cheap.

Revitalive Cafe

Revitalive Cafe is a clean, sleek, modern-looking raw vegan place just a half-hour south of Kittery in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Moderately priced, Revitalive offers standard deli and comfort food fare without the cruelty. The sides and salads are entrees unto themselves, or the perfect size for sharing. The sandwiches are traditional vegan deli favorites such as mock tuna salad, un-reuben and falafel. Save room for dessert or a smoothie. Definitely the most comprehensively vegan place near Kittery, Maine.

The Juicery

The Juicery is a smoothie and juice bar with a vegan-friendy sandwich shop right over the Memorial Bridge in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The smoothies aren't vegan, but the juice is. The sandwiches are all vegetarian and organic, and can easily be made vegan by removing dairy-based sauces or substituting them for non-dairy-based sauces. While close to Kittery, The Juicery has the detriment of only being open during the spring and summer.

Frankie & Johnny's Natural Food Restaurant

Frankie & Johnny's Natural Food Restaurant is a scant fifteen minutes north of Kittery, and boasts a vegan-friendly gourmet menu. Frankie & Johnny's is a little on the pricey side, but has amazing food with a friendly staff. Bring cash (no plastic accepted here), but also bring your own booze. Seasonal hours, but open most of the year with the exception of January.

The Friendly Toast

The Friendly Toast is a hip, eclectically decorated, moderately priced diner in downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire, less than ten minutes from Kittery. The menu offers vegan "hamburgers," faux bacon and sandwiches, but the kitchen will happily make anything vegan. Peruse the menu and talk to your server about making whatever dish you fancy cruelty-free.
