Sanibel Island
If you're looking for pristine, unspoiled beaches and the ultimate shelling experience, then Sanibel Island is the perfect choice. Sanibel Island is just 23 miles from Naples and easily reachable by the Sanibel Causeway. Small beach town charm, plenty of restaurant choices, golfing, fishing, canoeing, cycling and tennis, all make for an unforgettable day trip from Naples. The J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge and Bird Sanctuary is a must-see for bird lovers. According to Sanibelisland.com, the beaches on Sanibel Island are world renowned for shelling. Beachcombers from all over the world spend hours hunched over doing the "Sanibel Stoop," as they hunt for ocean treasures.
Goodland Island
Avid fishermen and women will enjoy a day trip to Goodland, Florida, a tiny fishing village in the Southeast corner of Marco Island. Goodland's population of 400 people relish their reputation as one of the best fishing spots in Southern Florida. Fishing charters can be arranged for a couple of hours to a full day; or, cast your luck off the shores and docks. Visit in the fall during the annual potluck Hog Roast, where you can play horseshoes, cheer on the crab races, dance and listen to great live music. Kayak and canoe trips are also available on Goodland Island. Collier-Seminole State Park, less than 10 miles away, offers excellent hiking and biking trails. A relaxed pace and friendly locals make this an enjoyable 30 mile drive that's well worth a short excursion from Naples.
Peace River, Punta Gorda
Perhaps one of the best, "off the beaten path" day trips from Naples is a trip to Peace River in Punta Gorda. About a 45-mile drive from Naples, Peace River feels like a step back in time. Spanish moss drapes gracefully from oak trees and still waters beckon the outdoor lover. Too shallow for motorboats, the water here is exceptional for a relaxing kayak or canoe trip. Abundant wildlife can be viewed just off the shores as you glide by in the tranquil waters. Fossilized shark teeth litter the river bottom and can be easily spotted in the clear water. Other animal fossils, such as mammoth and bison can be found in this area as well. Around bends and turns you'll find grassy shores on which to picnic; it's the perfect way to spend a day.
Tips on Day Tripping
Most Florida islands double in population between the months of January and March, when an influx of winter visitors flock to Florida for the sun and warmer weather. For a more relaxing experience, visit during the shoulder seasons (April through May and October through December). For those needing to rent a car, you'll find easy access to most rental car companies in Naples. Sanibel Causeway is a toll road; be sure to inquire about the amount of the toll before heading over the bridge (as of 2009 the toll is $6).
