Fells Point, Baltimore Hotels

Fells Point, Baltimore Hotels
Fells Point, a maritime district older than downtown Baltimore proper, puts on a party every fall with the Fells Point Festival and a wild Halloween. But the funky neighborhood offers more than just 88 bars. Cheer on runners in the Baltimore Marathon or run it yourself. Yankees, Indians and Red Sox fans in town to follow their teams often stay here to get a look at a Baltimore neighborhood as real as it gets. If noise bothers you, avoid street-front rooms at the Admiral Fell Inn or Celie's Waterfront Inn.

The Inn at Henderson's Wharf

With a little imagination, you can picture the graceful clipper ships that once docked at Henderson's Wharf. A marina surrounds two sides of this converted tobacco warehouse complete with boardwalk, so you can sail right up. Often the choice of visiting actors--the cast of "Homicide: Life on the Street" called it home--The Inn at Henderson's Wharf ranks No. 1 at TripAdvisor.com for Baltimore hotels. It features 38 rooms with 30-inch flat-panel TVs with Dish Network and an onsite conference center. Free parking provides a big plus in this parking-crunched neighborhood. Enjoy a free bottle of wine and orchids in the bathroom as well as a 24-hour fitness center. Walk two blocks to the heart of Fells Point, three blocks to the water taxi and 15 minutes to eclectic Harbor East.

Admiral Fell Inn

Right in the middle of the action at Thames and Broadway, the Admiral Fell Inn formerly served as a seaman's hotel and ship's chandlery. Dating from the 1770s, the inn sits catty-corner to Broadway Pier, seen in "When Harry Met Sally," with its working tugboats as well as visiting Navy and tall ships. The inn houses Meli, a Mediterranean restaurant open daily, and offers high tea. History buffs can sign up for a ghost tour of the inn or a historical walk. Visit the Horse You Came In On Saloon, steps away from the front door and possibly the last place Edgar Allen Poe took a libation. Don't miss Soundgarden if you like used CDs and a wide music and DVD selection. The inn's 80 rooms overlook either Broadway Square, the water, a courtyard or residential Shakespeare Street. Pets can stay, too. The inn features free day passes to the world-class MAC Wellness health club with four pools. Valet and street parking are available as well as a nearby garage and shuttle service.

Celie's Waterfront Inn

This nine-room inn anchors the middle of the waterfront 1700 block of Thames, looking from the water like a little Irish village of pastel house fronts. Celie's rooms feature fireplaces, courtyard views and satellite TV. The roof deck offers a few of the busy Northwest Branch of the Patapsco. Borrow a loaner laptop or make local and long-distance calls for free. The inn offers midweek corporate rates and parking for a few dollars a day. Step out the front door, and you're in the mix of Fells Point. Turn right for eateries including Kooper's, Slainte, Kali's Court and Pazo. The harbor water taxi stops across the street.
