Frank Pepe's Pizzeria
The proprietor might call them tomato pies, but this is good pizza by anyone's measure. the dining room is bright and the staff is friendly. Better yet, you can try a pizza that is a classic, like pepperoni and mozzarella, or something a little different, like pies with salami or clams. Frank Pepe's has intimate seating for two or seating for the whole gang in the back. There's also a fully stocked bar for those interested in wine, beer or cocktails.

Sally's Apizza
For brick-oven pizza, there is no place in New Haven quite like Sally's. Just down the street from Frank Pepe's, the two have had an on-going rivalry for years. Sally's Apizza is also rumored to have been a favored hang-out of people like Bill Clinton and Frank Sinatra over the years. The crowds always in abundance at Sally's may be another indication that people think it is worth the wait. Pizza here is crisp from the brick oven and flavored with lots of basil and a hints of oregano.

Modern Apizza
For a non-smoking option that features not only great pizza, but also great calzones and other Italian dishes, consider Modern Apizza. The "Modern" is a bit of misnomer, since this pizzeria started in the midst of the Great Depression. With bright lights and wooden booths, Modern Apizza has a neighborhood feel that draws visitors in and invites them to stay. Touted especially for its service and its take-out window, Modern Apizza is an alternative to the trendier spots on Wooster Street.
