Restaurants in City Island, New York
City Island in the Bronx, a mile-and-a-half-long strip that shares very little with the rest of the Bronx or New York, is rather reminiscent of a small fishing town in New England. There are a few yacht clubs and marinas where you can rent a small fishing boat, or you can skip the fishing and head straight for one of the island's many seafood restaurants. On a summer evening, City Island is a great place to come and enjoy the sunset with fresh seafood and crisp ocean air.

Lobster Box

The Lobster Box offers a variety of seafood. The impressive raw bar has some nice selections, and the oysters are very reasonably priced. The sandwiches and salads are constructed from the day's catch -- crab cakes, fish, and of course, lobster. This is a great, family-oriented spot where the focus is on simple food and ample portions.

The Original Crab Shanty

The Crab Shanty is one of the better-known restaurants on City Island. The interior, with its rows of booths, is an ode to a time long gone, and is always full and boisterous. The Crab Shanty is open late, especially on the weekends, so it's a great place to go for a late-night bite. The menu is enormous: there are many kinds of freshly caught fish and seafood on offer and a separate children's menu; A good bet is to sit back and order a combination platter. There is also a full bar and many specialty cocktails. The staff is very friendly and attentive.

Sammy's Fishbox Restaurant

Sammy's is a local institution that has been serving this community since the 1960's. Sammy's has several sister restaurants scattered throughout City Island, but this is the classic. The restaurant is famil- friendly, low-key and unpretentious, with a long menu and decent wine list. The food is fresh and the portions are massive and are accompanied by a delicious side of corn bread, so come hungry.

The Black Whale

The Black Whale is a small and cozy little restaurant that serves simple and well-prepared classics. The menu is smaller than the ones you'll find in other places and features some meat dishes along with the standard shrimp scampi, and Maryland crab cakes. There is a lovely outdoor space to lounge in on a warm evening. The Black Whale is slightly more expensive than some of the other selections, but both the food and the ambiance make it well worth the price.
