Hotels in Ollantaytambo, Peru

Hotels in Ollantaytambo, Peru
Nestled among the Andes Mountains, Ollantaytambo, or Ollanta for short, is an often overlooked gem in Peru's Sacred Valley. It is a great base for hiking, biking and horseback riding, and is the starting point for many organized river rafting expeditions. The town is built almost entirely on foundations laid by ancient Incas. Its main square has an assortment of cafes and shops selling local arts and crafts. Accommodations in Ollantaytambo are basic, mainly small hotels and hostels, but offer charm to equal its scenery.

Budget

Ollantaytambo contains a number of hostels, offering the most basic accommodations. Shared and single rooms are available, but bathrooms are all shared. Some include breakfast with the price, which ranges from $3 to $20 per night. Take in views of the Ollantaytambo fortress ruins from the balcony at Hostal Nusta or find seclusion in the garden cottage at Albergue Kapuly. Hostal Nusta offers horse rentals while the KB Hotel organizes mountain biking, hiking and rafting tours.

Mid-Range

Looking for a private room and private bath? Stay at one of Ollantaytambo's mid-range hotels, priced from $20 to $50 dollars a night. The British-owned Apu Lodge has views of old town, mountains and ruins, and arranges hiking and biking tours to local attractions like Inka ruins and a Quechua weaving community. The colorful, family-run Hotel Munay Tika sits on the river and has a relaxing garden courtyard. Andean Moon is a cozy getaway on a cobblestone street, with beamed ceilings, wood floors and local art. Roof access and jacuzzi are available, the latter for an extra charge.

Upscale

Ollantaytambo is not a ritzy destination. Top of the line accommodations here imply private room and bath, cozier beds and gourmet meals, and are priced from $60 to $150 per night. Hotel Sauce offers modern rooms, some with views of the ruins, and is located near the main town square. Its lobby houses a pleasant fireplace bar. El Albergue, owned by an American ex-pat artist, offers peace, displays of local art, a eucalyptus steam sauna and bird-watching tours. Mingle with fellow travelers in the fireplace lounge and library of Hotel Pakaritampu or find seclusion in its gardens.
