Avalon, New Jersey's wide, clean beaches are perfect for fishing, body surfing, long walks along the shore or just lounging in the sun. Visit the nearby Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary, a preserved wetlands area where hundreds of rare birds nest. The restored sanctuary now offers several trails and gardens for visitors to get a closer look at the herons, egrets, pelicans and more, as well as butterflies, ancient trees and colorful flowers. Go fishing or kayaking as you watch the sun set over Avalon's bay. There are several quality hotels located just minutes from the beach.

Golden Inn

The oceanfront Golden Inn Hotel and Resort is one of Avalon's premier hotels. Many rooms feature spectacular views of the beach. The Golden Inn offers several dining options, including the elegant dining room and the more casual Luigi's Vino & Pasta. During the summer, enjoy an outdoor cocktail at the cabana bar. Many special packages are available, including golf getaways, girlfriends' weekends and wine weekends. Off-season rooms start at about $99, while mid-summer rates are from $225 per night (2009 prices).

Windrift Resort Hotel

Another beachfront option is the Windrift. The Windrift has 94 rooms, many with ocean views. With seven different types of rooms available, the Windrift can accommodate groups large and small. The sun deck bar on the hotel's second floor overlooks the ocean and is a popular happy hour destination. Rooms start at about $94, with summer prices starting at about $220 per night (2009 prices).

Desert Sand Resort

The Desert Sand Resort is just a short walk from the beach. It has both an indoor and an outdoor pool. The on-premise Fuze Restaurant & Mirage Lounge serves breakfast and dinner. Special holiday weekend packages for Labor Day, Memorial Day and Columbus Day include a full daily breakfast. During May, rooms start at about $77, and in July, they run from about $135 per night (2009 prices).

The Beachcomber Hotel Resort

The Beachcomber is located on the border of Avalon and Stone Harbor. The condominium-hotel's 55 suites are individually owned, but are available for rent throughout the summer. All rooms have basic kitchen supplies, including a stove, refrigerator, sink, utensils and much more. If you need a break from the crowd at the beach (just a block away), enjoy the quiet seclusion of the Beachcomber's garden-area pool. Efficiencies start at about $95 during May and about $185 during the high season (2009 prices).

Concord Suites

Located just one block from the beach, the quiet Concord Suites is a perfect family destination. Each of the 90 suites has two double beds and a convertible sofa, sleeping six comfortably. The hotel's two pools both feature fenced-off kiddie sections. Enjoy pizza and sandwiches at the hotel's Concord Café. Suites start at $89 during the early season, about $216 in mid-summer (2009 prices).
