German Restaurants in Michigan

German Restaurants in Michigan
Whether you are looking for famous German sausages, schnitzels, fresh breads or pretzels, Michigan has much to offer. Explore the German resort town of Frankenmuth, visit a German pub in Ann Arbor, or satisfy your cravings for authentic German food in other parts of the state. In addition, Michigan is home to many breweries; many establishments offer authentic German beers ranging from golden hefe-weizens to rich bock beers and more.

Zehnder's of Frankenmuth

Frankenmuth, also known as "Little Bavaria," is a unique Michigan town. Zehnder's of Frankenmuth is located on Main Street in the heart of the town. The establishment actually consists of a restaurant, hotel, golf course, water park, and a group of retail shops.

At Zehnder's, the atmosphere is old-fashioned, festive and family-oriented. Servers wear traditional German clothing. The restaurant is famous for its golden fried chicken dinners and classic German fare, including Bavarian sausages, schnitzel, and a wide variety of fresh breads and European pastries. The restaurant can serve over 10,000 people on weekends, so make reservations or visit during off-peak hours.

Woods

Mackinac Island is located between Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas. Because motor vehicles are not permitted on the island, horse-drawn carriages are the norm; visitors will find themselves transported back in time. The Woods restaurant is part of a Tudor mansion built in 1905. The atmosphere combines Bavarian flair with the feel of a hunting lodge and an elegant chalet.

Woods' patrons can enjoy fresh fish dishes unique to the area, like seared Michigan whitefish with leek fondue. German specialties include käsespätzle, baked noodles with onions and cheese, as well as spicy beef goulash with hazelnut spätzle, onion potato cakes, an extensive beer selection and an award-winning wine list.

The Heidelberg Restaurant

The Heidelberg Restaurant is located in Ann Arbor, an area buzzing with university students. The restaurant's proximity to the University of Michigan brings collegiate spirit into its interior.

The Heidelberg serves a robust menu of authentic German dishes along with American fare. Items like the cheese and sausage platter, wiener schnitzel and beef goulash are long-loved standards. Marinated fish, wild mushroom strudel, German potato salad and red cabbage are but several among many classics. Make your way downstairs to the Rathskeller bar for a full selection of authentic German beers or head upstairs to the Club Above for live music, poetry readings and comedy on select nights.
