Northwestern Minnesota affords a wide range of resorts and campgrounds for the outdoor enthusiast who wants to explore the state of 10,000 lakes and its wildlife, fishing, and scenery. In the summertime, enjoy activities such as canoeing, kayaking, and swimming. In the winter months, come for ice-fishing and cross-country skiing. Many trails are open year-round but consult dates of specific parks before traveling.

Zippel Bay Resort

Situated on Minnesota's Lake of the Woods near the Canadian border, the Zippel Bay Resort rents twenty log cabins near the waters' edge. The quarters offer central air, fireplaces and modern appliances. In summertime, the nearby Zippel Bay State Park offers a swimming beach, campsites and a stone jetty that provides protected access to Lake of the Woods. Birdwatcher can view sandhill cranes and piping plovers. In winter, the park has seven miles of groomed cross-country trails that wind to the lakeshore through the forest. Zippel Bay State Park also has two state campgrounds, Faunce and Blueberry Hill), in the Beltrami Island State Forest. Camping is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Douglas Lodge

The historic Douglas Lodge is located in the heart of Itasca State Park, the oldest state park in Minnesota. There are three suites and four bedrooms on the second floor with a restaurant on the first. Reservations recommended. Accommodations include amenities such as wireless Internet, fireplaces and large decks. Itasca State Park has more than 32,000 lakes and 100 islands. The Mississippi River begins its southward journey to the Gulf of Mexico in the park.

Whispering Pines Resort

Sitting alongside 325 feet of sandy beach of Big Pine Lake, the Whispering Pines has long been a premiere location for all kinds of water activities with rentals of water bikes, paddle boats, and canoes for wildlife sightings. The resort has a dozen cabins for rent. Reservations recommended. Maplewood State Park is less than twenty miles away. The park has an extensive trail system for hikers and boasts an ample variety of wildlife with 150 bird species and 50 mammal species.

Fox Lake Camground

Founded more than 30 years ago, Fox Lake Campground has 70 lakeside and lake view sites for tents. Reservations accepted. Wi-Fi service is available. The campground is on the bank of Fox Lake, a secluded and scenic locale on the edge of the Continental Divide just 100 miles south of Canada. Fox Lake itself is situated in the western part of Buena Vista Sate Forest with numerous trails hiking, biking and cross-country skiing.
