Located on the east shore of Onondaga Lake, Liverpool, N.Y., is one Syracuse's largest suburbs. Onondaga Lake Park is a biking and walking trail that runs along the lake's shore, and a handful of museums commemorate the area's heritage. The Salt Museum showcases the the salt trade that once dominated the area, while St. Marie Among the Iroquois pays tribute to the Iroquois tribe that once was headquartered in Liverpool. The area is complemented by a host of family-owned eateries.

The Retreat

One of the most popular restaurants in the northern suburbs, The Retreat's casual atmosphere is reflected in its menu of sandwiches, burgers and entrees. Seafood is the specialty of the house, with broiled and grilled dishes available all week long and more elaborate specials served on Friday and Saturday. The restaurant's macaroni and cheese is and extremely popular dish served during the colder months. The Retreat is a moderately-priced restaurant open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. During the spring and summer, patio seating is available. Reservations are recommended on the weekend evenings.

Canale's Restaurant

Canale's Restaurant is a sit-down and takeout venue. The family-owned restaurant prides itself on homemade traditional Italian sauces based on family recipes. The menu features traditional chicken and veal entrees. Canale's specialty is its homemade pastas, which can be prepared with any of the 13 house sauces, including its unique Romano-style sauce--traditional tomato sauce mixed with Romano cheese and butter. Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, Canale's does not take reservations. Dress is casual at Canale's, with entrees ranging between $9 to $20 (as of November 2009).

Juanita's Mexican Kitchen

Located in a former Ponderosa Steakhouse, Juanita's Mexican Kitchen may look out of place, but the food more than makes up for the ambiance. The authentic, a la carte Mexican menu serves ground beef, chicken, bean and cheese, shredded beef, chorizo, pork and grilled vegetables in burritos, enchiladas, chimichangas, quesadillas and tacos. A casual, moderately-priced restaurant, Juanita's is closed on Sundays and does not take reservations.

Tully's Good Times

Tully's Good Times is an upstate New York chain of family sports-themed restaurants. Its signature offering are Tully's Tenders, which are chicken breast tenderloins coated in a homemade breading that makes them different from competitiors. Tully's serves 15 different hamburgers and a number of different chicken, fish and deli sandwiches. The decor is aimed at sports fans with more than 150 TVs, walls are lined with sports memorabilia and the tabletops feature sports cards. Dress is casual and prices are very reasonable, with few entrees exceeding $12 (as of November 2009). Tully's is open seven day a week for lunch, dinner and late-night sports viewing.
