At Traverse City, Michigan's, Great Wolf Lodge, you have just about anything you'd want right there: pools, spa services, a fitness center and a variety of dining options. But to experience all that Traverse City has to offer to outdoor enthusiasts, you'll have to leave the resort eventually. So after you've biked along the Grand Traverse Bay or hiked a local trail, try a restaurant that's only a few miles from Great Wolf Lodge.

Amical

For more than 10 years this European-style bistro has charmed visitors and residents alike. Amical has an outdoor patio and a great view of West Grand Traverse Bay. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner daily and Sunday brunch, with menus changing frequently. If you've been pedaling along the bay, just come as you are. Remember to save room for dessert.

Mode's Bum Steer

Close to Hannah, Lay and Legion parks, and the Boardman River, Mode's Bum Steer specializes in Black Angus steaks, seafood and ribs. The restaurant is closed Sundays, but is open the rest of the week from 11 a.m. until late at night. If you have children under 8 years old, you'd best come for lunch, as Mode's doesn't allow young kids past 5 p.m.

Poppycock's

Just west of Amical on Front Street is Poppycock's, which is in a building that's housed several eateries since the late 1920s. The menus change with the season, but everything on them is under $25 (as of 2009). Sample the signature pita chips; the chef serves them with sides of hummus, salsa and hot Jarlsberg cheese dip. Poppycock's is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, plus Sunday brunch. Its Front Street location makes casual Poppycock's ideal for folks who've been hiking or biking the nearby TART trail. Be sure to check out the live music on Friday and Saturday nights.

Trattoria Stella

Experience the meats and produce of local farms at Trattoria Stella, which opened in 2004 in the basement of a former asylum. The restaurant lists the names of these farms at the top of its menu every day. Italian cuisine dominates here, including pasta or pizza. Trattoria Stella is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday, and dinner only on Sunday. It's less than two miles from Great Wolf Lodge.
