Hobbit Boutique Hotel
The birth of JRR Tolkien in Bloemfontein in 1892 is the inspiration for this theme hotel, whose rooms are individually decorated and named after Tolkien-created characters. All rooms come equipped with a fireplace, an Internet connection, stocked minibar and a tea-and-coffee tray. Individual touches include nighttime bed turn-downs with sherry and a goodnight chocolate.
Guests can check out a volume from the library and curl up in the window cove seat overlooking the gardens, or cool off in the hotel pool during summertime. A restaurant and pub are on site to satisfy visitors' eating and drinking needs.

De Oude Kraal Country Estate
This 6,000-acre sheep farm is located about 20 miles south of Bloemfontein along the N1. It takes its name from the family that has owned the estate for six generations, and from the term "kraal," meaning an enclosure built from rocks to protect livestock from predators.
The estate's individually-decorated rooms feature a private patio, open fireplace, TV and tea-and-coffee facilities. For added comfort, the beds are outfitted with a goose down duvet and mohair blanket, and some rooms include a spa bath. Dining is available on-site, and there's a country tea each afternoon with fresh, homemade pastries. A swimming pool and tennis court round out the amenities.
Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the outdoor activities available at the farm, such as miles of hiking trails and horseback tours. Birdwatchers have compiled a list of 116 different species spotted on the grounds, including the rare black-headed heron.
