Herkimer Diamond Mines
Although you won't find underground shafts with rail carts here, and just about as much of a chance at finding a real diamond, you might dig up some "dream rocks." Given the nickname because of their supposed powerful energy flow when place in pillowcases, these multi-faceted quartz crystals have points at both ends, and Middleville is reportedly one of the few places in the world where you can find them. Geared more toward families with kids, Herkimer has a gift shop where you can find hammers and goggles to assist in your search.

Ace of Diamonds Mine
Located adjacent to Herkimer's Mines, this competing gravel pit sees more serious diggers who have a better chance of finding diamonds. For seven bucks, you can "stake a claim" and pound away at the hillside, which has been cut back from the roadside by thousands of visitors looking for treasure. It's dirty, back-breaking work, but at the end of your dig you can take home all the diamonds and any other rocks you may have found.

Annual Diamond Jubilee Gemfest
For three days in late summer, Middleville residents pull out all the stops for this annual ritual which, ironically, has nothing to do with gems. Live music, hayrides, art exhibits, fishing and fireworks are some of this attraction's highlights, which also includes a parade. There's also several book, rummage and bake sales, and plenty of good food. You can also check out the Person of the Year Award presentation and Middleville's very own talent show.
