Montana Firefighter Requirements

Montana Firefighter Requirements
In order to be a firefighter in Montana, you must pass the Montana Firefighter Testing Consortium exam. The exam occurs annually during the month of June. People who pass the exam are placed on a list of qualified candidates for the position of entry-level firefighter. The fire departments in Montana that participate in the Montana Firefighter Testing Consortium are Billings, Bozeman, Great Falls, Helena, Miles City, Kalispell, Butte and Missoula.

Requirements to Sit for the Exam

In order to sit for the Montana Firefighters exam, you must have a valid driver's license, at least a high school diploma (or equivalent) and be 18 years of age or older.

The Exam

The exam has a written portion and a physical ability test. The written portion is first, and you must pass the written portion before attempting the physical ability portion of the test.

After the Exam

Passing the exam places you on a list of qualified candidates--it does not get you a job. You must still apply to the fire departments for a job. Each individual department will have its own application procees.
