The largest suburb of Albany, New York, Colonie had a population of 79,258 in the 2000 census. Situated to the north of Albany, the town of Colonie is actually composed of two villages: Menands and Colonie. It was founded in 1895 after residents of rural areas objected to the state's plan to incorporate them into Watervliet. The center of town at one time included a significant Shaker farming community, and until the post-war boom, the area was primarily a series of large farms. In 2007, Colonie was rated as the sixth safest place to live in America.

Butcher Block Steak and Seafood Restaurant

Opening in 1982, the Butcher Block is an institution in the greater Albany area. Exactly the environment one looks for in a steakhouse, the all-wood interior and deer antler-inspired chandeliers set the mood upon arrival. Customers enjoy not one but two solaria while sampling the eclectic and unpretentious menu. The facilities even include a private room that seats 30 for special functions or meetings. The Block (as the locals call it) is open for lunch Monday through Friday and dinner 7 days a week.

Sitar Indian Restaurant

Under the same ownership and featuring the same chef since opening in 1983, the Sitar Indian Restaurant was named as the best Indian food in the Albany area in 2008 by Metroland Magazine. It features a standard lunch buffet Tuesday through Friday, a special lunch buffet on Sunday, and dinner service Tuesday through Sunday. The Sitar offers both catering and take-out, and is available for party rental. Closed Monday.

Reel Seafood Company

Located within easy access to and from I-87, the Reel Seafood Company has been ranked as the best seafood in the Capital District since 1984. Featuring a casual atmosphere and upscale menu, the Reel Seafood Company has the area's largest raw bar, serving cold water oysters, clams and shrimp cocktail. Open for lunch and dinner service Monday through Friday and dinner service only starting at 3:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Reservations recommended.
