Ouray, Colorado bills itself as both "The Switzerland of America" and "The Jeeping Capital of the World." Thousands flock to this remote town in Colorado's San Juan mountains each year to explore hundreds of miles of four-wheel drive roads and hiking trails each summer or to scale the walls of the town's world-famous ice park in the winter. Ouray also offers miles of scenic drives, several well-preserved ghost towns, a working gold mine and natural hot springs. You don't have to leave your best friend at home when you visit Ouray, since there are several local pet-friendly hotels.

Riverside Inn

Located on the banks of the Uncompahgre River, Riverside Inn has 19 motel rooms, as well as suites, condos and cabins for rent. Your dog should love staying here, since miles of hiking trails are literally right outside the back door. From the Inn you can walk to Ouray's River Trail, Perimeter Trail and other back-country destinations. All rooms feature hand-carved log furniture, free wireless Internet and satellite television. Suites also have kitchens. As of 2009, room rates begin at $55. There is no size restriction on pets and no extra fee for pets, which are welcome in ground-floor rooms only. You will be charged if you don't clean up after your pet. There's a convenience store and a Jeep rental facility on site. When you make your reservation, let them know you need a pet-friendly room.

Comfort Inn

Ouray's Comfort Inn has 33 guest rooms near the center of town, within walking distance to most shops and the Ouray Ice Park. Rooms include one or two beds, free wireless Internet, satellite television and a guest laundry. The room price includes breakfast in the lobby every morning, including make-your-own waffles. There's an outdoor hot tub open year-round--a great way to relax after a day of hiking or climbing, with a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains. Rates as of 2009 started at $65 a night. Pets are welcome here for an additional $15 a night per pet.There are no stated restrictions on the size of pets. Guests can receive discount lift tickets to Telluride Ski Resort and discount admission to the Ouray Hot Springs pool.

River's Edge Motel

The River's Edge offers king rooms, kitchenettes and larger family rooms that sleep up to six people. Rooms without kitchens feature microwaves and refrigerators. The rooms are plain, but clean, and the grounds are beautiful. Rates as of 2009 begin at $60 a night. Dogs are welcome here, for an additional $10 per pet per day. Guests are free to use the grills and picnic tables at the outdoor picnic area or soak in the hot tub overlooking the Uncompahgre River.

Rimber Ridge Lodge

Timber Ridge Lodge has both king and queen rooms with summer rates starting at $69 a night and winter rates from $49 a night. All rooms are non-smoking. Pets may stay here for an additional $10 per pet per night (as of 2009). If you leave your pet unattended in the room and the staff finds out about it, the charge goes up to $125 a night. This is the closest motel to the Hot Springs pool. The owners also operate an RV park adjacent to the motel.

Ouray Victorian Inn

The Ouray Victorian Inn offers 36 rooms, all non-smoking. Nine of these rooms are available to guests with pets. Rooms feature refrigerators, free Wi-Fi and satellite TV. Guests may also use grills and picnic facilities on site near the Uncompahgre River. The Inn offers several hot tubs for guest use and serves a free breakfast each morning. The Inn is within walking distance of the Ouray Ice Park, Box Canyon Falls and downtown Ouray. Room rates begin at $75 a night. Pets incur a $10 per night extra charge (as of 2009).
